Process Control Systems Design, Installation and Servicing for Food and Beverage Facility

Avalon Controls Ltd. has designed and installed several extensive process control and safety systems for a food and beverage facility. The systems are involved in each step of the production and the detection of hazardous gases in the plant. This includes:

  • Automation of production sequences.

  • Bottling, canning, and packaging of product.

  • Controls and automation of Clean-In-Place (CIP) system for cleaning the interior surfaces of pipes, vessels, process equipment, filters and associated fittings, without disassembly.

  • Detection of carbon dioxide, ammonia, and other dangerous gases throughout the plant.

These systems are comprised of operator displays, instrumentation, valves, pumps and other machinery controlled by various PLCs throughout the plant. All systems are designed to operate at high safety standards and optimize utilities usage. Engineering works included in the scope of this contract include:

  • Detailed familiarization with and automation of production processes.

  • Electrical designs.

  • Fabrication of panels.

  • Installation and calibration of equipment and instrumentation.

  • PLC programming.

  • Design and implementation of HMI graphics.

  • On-going maintenance and support.

Fabrication and Certification of Offshore Gas Analyzer Skid

Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted to provide procurement, project management and certification services, as well as fabrication and testing services for the online off-gas hydrogen sulfide gas analyzer skid for an offshore oil production facility.

The analyzer skid assembly was comprised of a heated pressure reduction station, analyzer sensor and electronics, sampling conditioning system, and associated purge pressurization controller.

All major components of the entire analyzer assembly were procured by Avalon Controls and installed at our facility. All testing and certification of the completed assembly was the responsibility of the Avalon Controls. Engineering works under the scope of this contract included:

  • Confer with offshore regulatory bodies and CSA to facilitate CSA field certification of completed analyzer assembly for installation in Class 1 Zone 2 hazardous area.

  • Development and execution of testing procedures for the completed assembly.

  • Installation off all system components, electrical, and process interconnection of components, in accordance with applicable standards and meeting requirements for a Class 1 Zone 2 hazardous area.

  • Manage all traceable project materials and provide complete material traceability of all wetted process stream materials.

  • Produce installation, commissioning, maintenance and operational documentation as required by the end user.

Power Systems Engineering for Major Offshore Development

Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted to provide engineering services for the temporary modification of the power system for a major offshore development to support the construction and installation process of that development, while continuing to service the permanent system loads.

The generating equipment was comprised of four 2.45MW, 4160V diesel electric generator-sets, which may be operated in isolation or interconnected through bus-tie circuit breakers. This system needed to be modified from the permanent system design to supply power to temporary construction loads and processes. Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted to fully vet and realize the proposed temporary modifications. Engineering works under the scope of this contract included:

  • Detailed familiarization with the power system permanent design. Development of temporary load list and defining temporary processes.

  • Power system studies evaluating the effect of temporary loads (load flow, motor starting, dynamic stability).

  • Presenting engineering analysis to support proposed hardware and software modifications required to support temporary functionality.

  • Development of “Work Packs” detailing the required field modifications to implement the temporary phase and the restoration of the systems for permanent use after installation offshore.

  • Development of testing plans and procedures.

  • Development of temporary configuration operating recommendations.

  • Site supervision for the Implementation of work packs and execution of testing procedures.

  • On-going maintenance and support.

Controls and Instrumentation Engineering for Industrial Fishing Vessel

Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted to provide engineering services to upgrade the switchboard and engine controls of an imported European-built vessel in order to meet required Canadian marine transportation standards, codes, and regulations.

The equipment was comprised of three independent diesel electric generator-sets, with outputs of 1820kVA, 1520kVA, and 320kVA, all of which required automatic synchronization for bump-less transfer of power. As identified by a marine certification agency, the vessel required modification of the switchboard instrumentation, controls, and power distribution and protection to meet Canadian standards. Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted to fully review the requirements, propose the necessary modifications, and provide a fully-compliant result in a timely manner. Engineering works under the scope of this contract included:

  • Detailed familiarization with the existing switchboard installation and its functionality.

  • Comprehensive review, compilation, and modification of existing electrical drawing sets.

  • Working closely with marine certification agencies to ensure the proposed engineering design is compliant with all regulations.

  • Development of "Work Packs" detailing a schedule and deconstruction/construction drawings to create a comprehensive and efficient work plan.

  • Working closely with the vessel's operational schedule to complete the work in an accommodating and timely manner.

  • Development of a full set of as-built electrical drawings.
